Jaylen Brown attacked from the wings. He asserted himself at the elbows, to rise up against each defender the Heat threw at him and knocked down shot after shot. Brown’s performance on Wednesday night in Miami struck notes of vintage, playoff Kobe Bryant.

The NBA is in the MIT-advanced-analytics-era. It is a league of three-true-outcomes: three-pointers, dunks, and free-throws. On this night, Brown added one more outcome to the mix — his midrange shot — and he dominated the Miami Heat as a result. NBA 2K22 rates Brown 86 overall and as a 3-level scorer.

Brown, like Kobe Bryant before him, broke defenders down in the lane and was un-guardable for an evening in South Beach. Brown’s handles, athleticism, and technically sound jumper were on display. Brown found his flow late in the third quarter and Celtics never looked back.

A glimpse of Jaylen Brown’s NBA 2K22 badges.

Brown, perhaps of House Slytherin, asserted himself with elite “dark art” skill. His game is elevating. He shows flashes of a determined leader. You can see it in his eyes and his body language. But for Jaylen Brown and the Celtics to take the final step, Brown will need to mirror Black Mamba’s competitive spirit for every second he is on the basketball court.

Kobe was cold-blooded. He never wavered. That instinct is an immeasurable characteristic we will never be able to assign a value to. And Brown, dealing dagger after dagger against his competition, is finding he can be a viper himself.
